A conversation with the artist.
Who are you?
My name is Kseniia. I’m an illustrator based in Toronto. I work with magazines, publishers, brands and people.
What do you create?
Illustrations that communicate ideas through simple forms, symbols and quiet compositions. I call them visual metaphors.
You often describe your work as “visual metaphors.” What do you mean by that?
An idea carried by an image, rather than explained in words. The objects in my work are rarely only objects. A flower, a house or a vase can become a way to speak about memory, absence, belonging or change. My illustrations are not about the objects, they are about the ideas those objects can represent.
Why such simple shapes?
Because they leave room for interpretation. The fewer details I add, the more space there is for your own experience.
What inspires your work?
Usually, an idea. It might begin with a conversation, a feeling or a place. The work is in finding the right visual language for it.
Why do flowers appear so often?
Flowers aren’t really the subject. They’re a language.
Who do you create for?
For people and projects looking for images that say something without saying too much. I work across editorial illustration, publishing, brand projects and licensing.
What are you working on now?
A series about home. New visual metaphors. The ongoing search for the perfect blue.
